Objective: This report analyzes TB notification trends in 2023 for the Capital region(Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi) and the "Greater Seoul Area" (including Gangwon), aiming to inform effective TB management strategies.
Methods: Data from the TB integrated management system (2014-2023) was used to analyze total TB patients, new patients, elderly (65+), foreigners, medical security types, and drug-resistant TB.
Results: In 2023, the Seoul metropolitan area saw a 3.6% decrease in total TB patients (8,707 cases), less than the national rate. The TB incidence rate among the elderly was 107.2 per 100,000, a slight decrease from the previous year. Foreigner incidence was 89.9 per 100,000, also a decrease. TB incidence among medical aid recipients (155.0) was 5.3 times higher than among 58 health insurance subscribers (29.0). MDR/RR-TB prevalence (3.1%) exceeded the national rate (2.8%).
Conclusion: The Capital region requires targeted management of elderly, foreign, and medically vulnerable populations. Gangwon requires customized strategies addressing aging and access limitations. Differentiated, region-specific approaches are needed to reduce TB incidence in the Greater Seoul Area.
Key words Tuberculosis, TB notification, TB notification rate
